We're trying to restore SB to patch 24.3. If we do open source, we can be guaranteed that it won't be 24.3. If you look at open source projects, people usually just contribute whatever features they feel like adding in.

Most programmers that would work on it would want to make their own customizations to Shadowbane. It's not like an html editor or web browser or something, because modifications to the design of Shadowbane would drastically alter the nature of the game. It's a guarantee that we would have a bunch of servers running different versions of SB, and it really wouldn't help all that much to speeding up the creation of a server running patch 24.3 since the focus would be scattered.

Open source might be fine for other projects, but not for this one.

As many have said before - Open source for a project of this nature would do as much to destroy the game as it would to help it.

I am amazed at all the people who will complain about something that SOMEONE ELSE is doing FOR THEM. The Devs are not being held at gunpoint, they are doing this because they want to see shadowbane up again, and rightfully so it is a great game ( even with Conc pots... )

Try to remain patient, b/c like it or not the Devs are the only way this will progress and pulling them away from their duities does not help

More people should read that post IMO.

It's easy to just ignore code that doesn't conform to the design goals, again with the stew, and needing a head chef. The splintered servers with what other people do with the code base could be a problem. Hell, I would at least consider defecting to a server that undid instant sneak. What a load of crap that patch was. I'm sure most other people have a "feature" that they want changed in SB, reverting it back to how it used to be, or just adding something they see as missing. That's why you couldn't just say "have at, build whatever you want out of our shadowbane server." But that's going to be a problem open or closed. I hope people are paying attention to what the dev's do closed source as well, cause otherwise we're all in for a surprise. If it was open you'd have an army of fact checkers and error checkers just waiting for someone to stray from the 24.3 ideal we all want restored.

It would be MUCH better for the life of Shadowbane if this EMU were open source. I remember the first announcement of this EMU project years ago, i signed up on these (old) boards when there was like 20 people and no posts and if i'm not mistaken it was going to be open source.

But really, as the OP said not only would it get this up faster, but it will actually introduce more people to SB with many different servers out there. It will also cause the best host to have the most population, yes there will be a lot of servers with hardly anyone, but so what? Don't play on them, just like the UO EMU shards, just like the wow EMU servers, there will be competition between the servers and the best will win the population. Trust me i've been playing on EMU servers for 15 years and even ran my own.

Have the one main original coders project, let people do their own thing, take what helps the original project. There will be many more "stock" servers then modified.

Riiiight....ever look at WoW private servers? Finding one that tries to be like the original is nearly impossible.

It wouldn't help it get done faster. What would happen is dozens of split-off projects.

Yes, but how many players does retail WoW have? Real players still prefer the original.

I understand both arguements but side with Open Source. These devs plan on keeping it pure and true - people lALWAYS revert to the original, tried and true.

It may splinter but everyone with their own server will still have toons and log plenty of play time here.

Just imo of course.
